Professor Tom Monath is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in virology, vaccinology, and infectious diseases. A former Director of the Division of Vector-Borne Viral Diseases at the U.S. CDC and Chief of the Virology Division at USAMRIID, he has played a pivotal role in advancing global public health and vaccine innovation.
Professor Monath has led the development of several groundbreaking vaccines, including those for Ebola, Smallpox (ACAM2000®), West Nile virus, Zika, Japanese Encephalitis, Influenza, and Dengue. He has authored more than 425 scientific publications and six textbooks, and is widely recognised for his contributions to infectious disease research, including the discovery of the rodent reservoir for Lassa fever.
In recognition of his exceptional impact on global health, he was awarded the Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal in 2023. Professor Monath continues to drive innovation in the field, with a Nipah virus vaccine candidate currently in clinical trials.
